Proper preservation of handmade carpets.

From the moment you own a handmade carpet, you have to know how to preserve it. Handmade carpets last through time. In contrast to the machine-made carpets, handmade ones last well due to the woolen thread which is tied up around the weft. If the carpet is preserved, stored and cleaned properly once a week, it can be inherited as an heirloom from generation to generation.

Cleaning vacuuming

The best method of cleaning is to apply snow on the nap of the carpet. It often snowed in the past, so the housewives used it appropriately. They used it to wash themselves and their clothes, white clothes and even the carpets. The method of washing a carpet is simple: all you need is plenty of water and the use of special equipment. In the past , the House of Ioakeimidis and its founder , Ioakeim , had a carpet laundry; they used water with sulfuric acid to keep the colours of the carpet vivid . We recommend washing once or twice every 5 years only by an expert in handmade carpet –cleaning.
Many housewives ask about the use of a vacuum cleaner. The answer is YES without hesitation. The frequency depends on the use and thickness of the carpet. If your carpet is thick, then it is not necessary to vacuum it very often.
The Greek people are among those who store their carpets during spring and summer. In this case, you should turn your carpet upside down and step on it before you put it away. In this way, -after a week- most of its dust will come out and its cleaning will be a proper one. Then, you vacuum the dust from the base and nap. If you vacuum it once a week, you can keep it clean from the dust which has accumulated due to everyday use. Remember to vacuum the reverse side as well.
Many housewives beat their carpets before storage. This can be done once or twice a year, but it is not necessary. It is not necessary to beat your carpet if you often vacuum it.
We strongly recommend not beating imported carpets, which have scanty knots. Carpets made of silk –are quite delicate- therefore, it is better to use a brush to remove dust instead of a vacuum cleaner.
The colours of the carpet are kept vivid if you use a cloth or a soft brush and some water with vinegar. Concerning the annual cleaning of your carpet, you mix 3 glasses of lukewarm water and 1 glass of white vinegar .Use a small brush, dip it in the liquid then shake it a bit and brush your carpet towards its nap. Dry it in a cool and shady place. DO NOT dry it in the sun, the colours will fade.

Your carpets (like other precious handmade materials) have to be open while storing them. (rarely, no space available) or rolled.
It is not recommended to fold your carpet in the form of a packet . In case, if it is folded for more than two weeks, the traces of this folding will be apparent on the carpet. It is also possible that when folded, the weft, which constitutes the base of a carpetmay, be destroyed; in this case special treatment is needed.
Most of the Oriental carpets go through a special mothproof procedure. The moth is the most serious enemy to a carpet.
Make sure that there are no moths in your carpet before you store it in a dry and cool place. Cover its surface with white or brown wrapping paper on which you put camphor or napthalene. In this way, you will keep the wool away from camphor or naphthalene. Avoid newspapers because their ink might be printed on the carpet.
Keep in mind that when rolling a carpet, it should not be wet and that you should roll it towards its nap. When finished, put the carpet in a horizontal position so that its edges won’t break. You can also roll the carpet around a paper cylinder longer than the carpet so that when put it in vertical position, the cylinder will touch the floor instead of the webbing of the carpet.
Finally, roll a cotton sheet around the carpet and put camphor leaving the edges of the roll open to the air. In summer, tie the edges of the roll for mothproof; untie them in winter.
In the past, people used petroleum instead of camphor or napthalene when storing the carpets because its smell was mothproof.
